Norway collaborates with KAIPTC to contribute to international efforts to promote peaceful elections in 2023 Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Nigeria

The Government of Norway over the years has demonstrated its commitment to peace promotion in West Africa. This commitment through its partnership with the KAIPTC has resulted in the building of capacities in the area of election management and global efforts towards effective monitoring of elections.

In view of this, the Government of Norway funded a 16-member election observation team from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) to observe the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. The KAIPTC election observation team engaged key stakeholders such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU) observation groups, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a comprehensive and effective observation of the electoral process in Nigeria.

The team’s task was to observe and report on the election process, paying particular attention to its impartiality, legitimacy, and openness. The team also evaluated the wider political climate and noted any potential dangers or difficulties that may jeopardize the election system’s integrity. The KAIPTC election observation team’s deployment demonstrates the Center’s dedication to advancing democratic governance and fair elections. Moreover, it exemplifies the need of regional and institutional coordination and cooperation in achieving credible, fair, and free elections.
