Media and Maritime Professionals Trained to Tackle Security Challenges in the Gulf of Guinea

The Maritime Security Reporting Course, held in Monrovia, Liberia, from August 26-30, 2024, brought together 25 participants from key maritime institutions, including journalists and media liaisons, to strengthen their capacity in addressing maritime security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).

Organized as part of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre’s (KAIPTC) collaboration with the Danish Government, the course aimed to equip media and maritime security professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively combat piracy, illicit activities, and other maritime crimes threatening the region.

A key focus of the training was the pivotal role of the media in maritime security. Participants explored how accurate and impactful reporting can raise awareness, foster accountability, and support broader efforts to enhance maritime safety.

Feedback from attendees highlighted the course’s effectiveness in building their technical capacity and deepening their understanding of the maritime security landscape. One participant noted that the training significantly enhanced their ability to contribute meaningfully to security initiatives in the region.

This initiative underscores the KAIPTC’s commitment to fostering regional stability by promoting collaboration between security institutions and the media. Through such programs, the Centre continues to address pressing challenges in the Gulf of Guinea, ensuring a safer maritime domain.
