The Women, Peace and Security Institute of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has participated in the Second African Women Leaders Network Forum held at the African Union Headquarters, Addis Ababa, and organized by The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN).
The theme of the Second Forum of the Network was “Women Working Together for the Africa We Want: From Commitment to Action”
AWLN is an initiative that seeks to create space for African Women to share leadership experiences and lessons learned. It seeks to galvanize African Women Leaders to play a significant role in the transformation of the continent, as aspired to, in both “Africa Agenda 2063” and the 2030 Global Sustainable Development Goals.
The Network made a “Call to Action” in which African Women Leaders identified key priority areas for action to achieve inclusive and sustainable peace, security and development in Africa.
The overall objective of the Second Forum was to establish and operationalize the Network. Additionally, the Network sought to agree on strategies to implement its aspirations and visions, to initiate flagship projects and develop a “Plan of Action” to deliver on priority areas, (including the African Women Leaders Fund) and to define the organizational structure and operationalization of the Network.
At the end of the three days, participants of the Forum were able to assist the Network in achieving it objectives for the meeting. A final communique was presented on the last day highlighting all the decisions from the meeting.
The forum was organised through the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (UN Women) and the Office of the African Union Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, respectively led by Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Mme Bineta Diop, with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany.
