KAIPTC Spearheads Code of Practice for Women in Maritime Security in West Africa

The Centre successfully completed a regional initiative to promote the “Code of Practice for Women in Maritime Security” from March to June 2024.

Funded by the Danish Government, the project aimed to address the specific challenges faced by women in the maritime sector across seven West African countries: Ghana, Cameroon, Congo-Brazzaville, Nigeria, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Liberia.

Aligned with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), the Code of Practice provides a framework for ensuring the active participation, protection, and advancement of women in maritime governance and security. KAIPTC conducted a series of activities in each country, including bilateral meetings with policymakers, media outreach campaigns, and launch events featuring dialogue seminars and panel discussions.

The initiative garnered significant positive response and generated valuable outputs, such as in-country media reports and detailed reports on consultations and launch events. These efforts contributed to raising awareness about the Code of Practice and encouraged its adoption at the national level.

KAIPTC’s commitment to enhancing the welfare and advancement of women in the maritime sector is evident through this initiative. By fostering collaborative efforts and addressing gendered challenges, the Code of Practice has made a significant contribution to the broader goals of UNSCR 1325 and regional peace and security. This demonstrates the vital role that women play in maritime governance and security.
