Introduction/Background
The far reaching security implications of violent armed conflicts and the need for a comprehensive response has rekindled the interest in peace and conflict resolution at all levels. This fact also underscores the important roles played by stakeholders such as individual and group actors at the local, national, and international level. Further to this, the development and mastery of the various approaches as well as strategies and tools employed in conflict resolution plays a crucial role in international conflict management. In this context, the actors in conflict analysis and mediation continue to devise modern and diverse means aimed at enhancing the understanding of the nature, causes, trends and dynamics of conflict and the role of mediators in its ultimate management.
At the same time, the increase in opportunities for peace-making by continental and regional organizations such as the African Union (AU), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) has resulted in an exponential growth in mediation interventions and associated conflict resolution activities in Africa.
The Conflict Analysis and Mediation (CAM) Course was originally designed in 2013 through collaboration between the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and Crisis Management Initiative (CMI). This was to match the need to intervene in conflicts on the one hand, and the need to increase understanding of the different tools, frameworks and aspects of conflict analysis and mediation among stakeholders in conflict prevention, management and resolution on the other hand.
