KAIPTC Commandant Meets Swiss Counterparts to Boost Regional Security and Development

(Geneva, Switzerland, 10th March 2025) – Major General Richard Addo Gyane, Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), joined a high-level Ghanaian delegation from 3rd to 6th March 2025 for a series of strategic engagements in Switzerland.
The four-day working visit demonstrated KAIPTC’s commitment to shaping peace and security across Africa, reinforcing its role as a hub for dialogue, research, and capacity-building.
On 3rd March 2025, Major General Gyane participated in the Ghana-Switzerland Political Consultations, an annual platform fostering bilateral cooperation. Discussions covered regional security, human rights, governance, and economic development issues.
With security in West Africa at a critical juncture, the Commandant briefed the Swiss delegation on evolving threats in the region, the Accra Initiative, and Switzerland’s partnership with KAIPTC in advancing peacekeeping efforts.

The Ghanaian delegation, led by Ambassador Ramses J. Cleland, Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, engaged in frank and constructive dialogue, deepening diplomatic ties and paving the way for stronger collaboration on peace and security initiatives.

On 5th March 2025, the KAIPTC Commandant traveled to Geneva, where he formalized an important partnership with the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Alongside Dr. Robin Geiss, Director of UNIDIR, Major General Gyane outlined a shared vision to advance research, policy engagement, and capacity-building in disarmament, security sector reform, and conflict prevention. This partnership will enable KAIPTC and UNIDIR to pool expertise, develop targeted training programs, and contribute meaningfully to peace efforts across Africa.

Major General Gyane concluded his visit with a meeting at the Kofi Annan Foundation, where he was welcomed by Executive Director Corinne Momal-Vanian and her team. Discussions focused on leveraging the legacy of Kofi Annan to promote dialogue, leadership, and solutions for Africa’s security challenges. A key outcome was the commitment to collaborate on hosting the next Kofi Annan Peace and Security (KAPS) Forum in Accra in the first quarter of 2026. This event, which convenes policy leaders, security experts, and key stakeholders, will provide a crucial platform to address emerging threats and build sustainable solutions for peace and security.

The engagements in Switzerland reinforced the importance of collaboration in fostering peace and security. They highlighted the need for strong partnerships, unwavering commitment, and bold leadership to tackle new and emerging challenges. By deepening diplomatic ties, forging new alliances, and strengthening research and training efforts, KAIPTC remains at the forefront of Africa’s security landscape, ensuring that the ideals of peace, development, and cooperation continue to shape the continent’s future.
