The Ghana Medical Relief (GMR) paid a courtesy call on the Commandant and some members of the Executive Management Committee of the KAIPTC in July 2024.
The visit was particularly meaningful for the GMR, as they took the opportunity to thank Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong, the Deputy Commandant of KAIPTC, for his support to the GMR in 2023. Air Commodore Akrong, then serving as Chief Staff Officer at the Air Force Headquarters, played a crucial role in facilitating the airlifting of medical personnel and supplies from Accra to Tamale, enabling GMR’s successful medical mission in the Northern Region.
The GMA delegation were led by Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, Chief Executive Officer of The John A. Kufuor Foundation and Dr. Samuel Owusu, a Philadelphia-based Ghanaian surgeon and founder of GMR They were accompanied to the KAIPTC by a group of medical experts and volunteers.
Dr. Samuel Owusu shared the history and goals of the organization and highlighted GMR’s dedication to improving healthcare in rural Ghana and proposed a formal partnership with KAIPTC to extend their outreach efforts.
Welcoming the proposal, Major General Richard Addo Gyane, the Commandant of KAIPTC, stressed the importance of advancing healthcare in Ghanaian rural communities. Both parties agreed in principle to collaborate on expanding GMR’s outreach initiatives, with a focus on next year’s medical mission to the Afram Plains in the Eastern Region. The specifics of the partnership are expected to be outlined in a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
In 2023, GMR, in collaboration with the John A. Kufuor Foundation and the Ghana Air Force, conducted a large-scale medical outreach in Tamale, where over 7,000 individuals received free medical care. The services provided ranged from pediatrics and urology to dental and obstetrics care. In addition to providing medical services, the organization also facilitated the procurement of National Health Insurance for over 3,000 needy individuals.
The partnership with KAIPTC represents a new chapter in GMR’s mission to enhance healthcare delivery in Ghana. As both institutions work towards finalizing their collaboration, there is renewed hope that this joint effort will bring much-needed medical relief to even more communities across the country.
