Conflict Analysis and Mediation (CAM 2020) Course

Introduction

Africa has suffered from decades of armed conflict, governmental repression and violence. This has brought many of its economies to the brink of collapse creating humanitarian casualties and concerns. While each of the conflicts has its own complexities, there are certain common root causes that can be distinguished and require attention to restore peace and security.  Mediation on the other hand is a major intervention tool that has been used to prevent and resolve many violent conflicts in Africa. And for any mediation process to be successful conflict analysis is essential. It is in this regard that conflict analysis as well as mediation is necessary to provide a deeper understanding of conflict trends and contexts, and also as a means to mitigate the insecurities that arise out of volatile situations.

The Conflict Analysis and Mediation Course was therefore designed to increase the understanding on the different tools, frameworks and aspects of conflict analysis and mediation among stakeholders for the purposes of conflict prevention, management and resolution.

Course Aim

The Conflict Analysis and Mediation Course has been designed with the aim of strengthening the critical, analytical and practical conflict analysis, mediation and negotiation skills, including the development of multi-level, locally relevant and tailor made approaches to conflict resolution. In order for it to be relevant to professional conflict resolution participants, the course aims at enabling the sharing of experiences and lessons learned in multi-track mediation and peace processes.

Objectives

At the end of the course participants will be able to;

• Deepen their understanding and awareness of the challenges and opportunities of the emerging African Peace and Security Architecture with a focus on preventive diplomacy and mediation.
• Understand key conflict analysis concepts and evaluate conflict analysis frameworks and underlying conceptual tools.
• Understand at a practical level the connections between conflict analysis and mediation.
• Acquire detailed knowledge of mediation theory and practice.
• Appreciate and critically reflect on the experiences of African mediators.
• Acquire detailed knowledge of the principles and procedures of negotiation and enhance their ability to demonstrate negotiation skills in practice.
• Enhance their understanding of gender considerations in mediation, peace processes and peace agreements.
• Integrate and evaluate political, social and cultural barriers in negotiations and conflict resolution.
• Understand mediation not just as a diplomatic tool but also as a conflict resolution/transformation tool.

• Conflict and Conflict Analysis – Theories, Stages Strategies;
• Introduction to Negotiation and Mediation;
• Gender, Women and Vulnerable Groups in Mediation;
• Diplomatic Considerations in Mediation;
• Cultural considerations in Mediation;
• AU/ECOWAS Approach to Mediation.

Teaching Methodology

Through a combination of lectures, simulation exercises, video/movie presentations, group work, role plays, case study analysis, quizzes and discussions, the course seeks to enhance participant’s theoretical as well as practical understanding of Conflict Analysis and Mediation in the Region. Participants will play active roles in the learning process under the guidance of a team of experienced facilitators.Following the completion of each module, participants will be encouraged to participate in group discussions to further their understanding of the concept’s more nuanced arguments.

Target Group

The course is open to individuals and organizations whose members/staff find themselves undertaking/supporting mediation efforts. Among the organizations targeted for participation in the course are: UN Missions in Africa, African Union, ECOWAS and other Regional Economic Communities (RECs) such as Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Practitioners in mediation related jobs are also encouraged to apply. Female participants are particularly encouraged to apply.

Course Fees

Each participant shall be required to pay a non refundable commitment fee of $500 USD (five hundred US Dollars).Participants who will require visa on arrival will also be responsible for the cost of their visas. KAIPTC shall be responsible for participant’s external (within Africa) travel, accommodation and feeding during the duration of the course.

Relevant Information

• The course will be conducted ONLYin English;
• Every participant will have to prove adequate health insurance coveragebefore travelling to the Centre. KAIPTC will not bear any health or accident costs for any participant.
