Thirty participants have received two weeks of training in Multi-Dimensional Peace Operations (MDPO) at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

The course which brought together participants with diverse backgrounds from 18 different countries,  primarily aims at  tutoring them to comprehensively understand the nature of African conflicts,  the main actors involved in MDPO, and the different functions they play in missions. It also covers the rule of law and the dynamics and legal framework of MDPOs.

In an interview with Mr. Baiye Mbu Nelson, a course participant from Nigeria, he revealed that the course has been very beneficial, as it illustrated the operational realities in peacekeeping operations.
The elated participant also stated that the course has aided them to increase their knowledge in peacekeeping missions; “the programme has directly helped us to build our capacity for field missions through the practicalities and challenges of peacekeeping we encountered in our two week training”, he said.
Commandant of KAIPTC, AVM Griffiths Evans, in his closing remarks highly commended the participants for their demonstrable commitment towards the training.

“The training gave you the opportunity to test the concepts you have learnt during the exercise ‘CARANA’. I am told you also underwent some brain-cracking and endured sleepless nights to work on presentations on current peacekeeping operations; I want to heartily congratulate you all for your hard work and for successfully completing this course”, he said.

The MDPO course has several modules which include Gender in Peace Operations, Responsibility to Protect, Protection of Civilians, Media and other important themes.

The Swiss Government significantly supported in developing, reviewing, financing and delivering the course.
